Public and private hospitals Mauritius
In the area of health, Mauritius takes up the English model of free health care for all. Citizens and residents have access to public hospitals and dispensaries without any cost. There are 14 public hospitals in Mauritius – general, district and specialized – and each city has a clinic. Private consultations are charged between 20 and 40€. Private hospitals are privileged by expatriates for the quality of the care they provide, but also to avoid the large influx of people, linked to free care.
Mauritius also develops cosmetic surgery institutes.
Social security and CFE : your support in Mauritius
Mauritian social security provides for free care in public hospitals, but does not cover private consultations. The CFE – social security for French expatriates – reimburses your health costs on the French basis. The Darné clinic in Floréal is bound by an agreement with the CFE and exempts you from any expense.
Health insurance for expatriates
The subscription of a health insurance specific to expatriates can be useful in Mauritius.
It is recommended to choose your insurance in advance, to ensure you are well covered in case of hospitalization for example. There are French expatriation insurers, such as APRIL International or Cigna Global, but you can choose a Mauritian insurer.
Recommended vaccines Mauritius
In moving to Mauritius, there is no special precaution for vaccination, as there is no risk of malaria.
The recommended vaccinations are the same as in Europe: hepatitis A, hepatitis B and tetanus-poliomyelitis.
